Why this call?
Beer advocaten is investigating whether women harmed by the Ballerine coil are entitled to compensation from the manufacturer. We are looking for women to share their stories with us.
Between 2019 and 2021, about 8,000 women in the Netherlands were fitted with the Ballerine copper coil. It was presented as a woman-friendly and modern alternative to the traditional copper IUD. The Ballerine IUD has been found to cause more and more serious problems than other copper IUDs.
Many women have become pregnant despite the IUD. In others, the IUD is so stuck in the uterus that removal requires medical intervention, sometimes even surgery under full anesthesia. The RIVM officially warned in February 2026 about the serious problems with removal. Radar investigated it before, the minister talked about it in the news. Still, many women do not know what their rights are.
Approved does not mean safe
The Ballerine coil had CE certification and was thus allowed to be marketed on the Dutch market as a medical device. Major physician organizations such as the NHG (Dutch College of General Practitioners) and the NVOG (Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology) never actively recommended the use of the Ballerine coil. The Medicines Bulletin gave the product a negative review back in 2020: no proven added value, insufficiently substantiated claims.
In 2021, the Ballerine coil quietly disappeared from the Dutch market, with no official recall and no communication to the women who had it.
The severity of the consequences is becoming increasingly clear. In the first nine months of 2025, MEBI received thirty reports of serious problems with IUD removal. Eighteen women required surgery. The RIVM called on health care providers to be alert. Minister Agema advised women to contact their family doctor. And on Instagram, the community is growing around #onslijfisgeenexperiment. Women who recognize themselves in these problems are finding each other there.
