Criminal hearing over bomb attack on houseboat in Wormer

On Friday, 25 March 2016 the Criminal Court began the hearing into the case of the suspect of the bomb attack on the Wormer houseboat in April 2015. One person died in the attack, while the victim’s partner suffered serious facial injuries, and was blinded in one eye. She claimed compensation for the loss sustained. The investigation has shown that the suspect attacked the wrong boat, and intended targeting one of the neighbouring boats.

Meanwhile the Court in the first instance has ruled, sentencing the perpetrator to seventeen years in prison. The victim was furthermore awarded € 126,000 in compensation, of which
€ 50,000 in non-economic damages. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed appeal against the judgment. On 28 August 2017, the hearing on appeal was started. On 20 September 2017 the Court of Appeal sentenced the perpetrator to eighteen years’ imprisonment. In its ruling the Court of Appeal furthermore ordered the perpetrator to pay damages to the victim, awarding more than € 140,000 in material damage plus another € 60,000 in non-economic damages.

Arlette Schijns represents the victim and filed the claim for damages on her behalf. This is compensation for the loss that the client has sustained as a victim, but also for the loss she sustains as the surviving relative of her spouse who was killed in the attack.
