On March 16, 2016, 19-year-old Fleur was seriously injured in Loosdrecht after her car was hit full in the flank by another car. The driver of this other car was reportedly engaged in a street race with his son, who was driving behind him, at the time of the accident, according to witnesses. More than two weeks after the collision, Fleur died of her injuries in the hospital. Arlette Schijns is assisting Fleur's mother and sister in the criminal proceedings against the drivers and in recovering damages. The court handed down criminal sentences to the drivers by judgment on Nov. 17, 2017. The father received four years in prison and a five-year disqualification from driving. The son received 100 hours of community service and also a disqualification from driving.
Both the prosecution and the father and son appealed the verdict. The court rejected the father and son's requests for investigation by interlocutory judgment on August 9, 2018.
The substantive hearing of the appeal took place on April 12, 2019. The prosecution's demand on appeal for the father was the same as the previous conviction by the court. The demand for the son was now one year in prison and three years of driving disqualification. Judgment will follow on April 26, 2019.
